Movie trivia

  • 1

Pen Densham reimagined Robin as a rich youth transformed into a socially conscious rebel by imprisonment in Jerusalem, wrote a 92-page outline, and had it rewritten as a screenplay by his producing partner John Watson.

  • 2

Kevin Reynolds had directed Kevin Costner before, including the buffalo-hunt sequence in Dances With Wolves, and Costner only agreed to join Robin Hood after learning Reynolds would direct.

  • 3

Costner and Reynolds disagreed about whether Costner should adopt an English accent; their indecision produced uneven delivery across scenes and Entertainment Weekly reported rumors his performance was too laid-back and his accent read as more LA than UK.

  • 4

Sean Connery was selected as King Richard at the behest of Costner and Densham; he agreed to work one day and reduced his requested $1 million fee to a $250,000 donation to a hospital in his native Scotland.

  • 5

Director Kevin Reynolds walked out of the project weeks before the theatrical debut, furious at the studio's repeated demands for further editing and at the studio locking his editor out of the cutting room, and he did not attend the screening.

  • 6

A 155-minute extended version released on DVD in 2003 added 12 minutes that expand the conspirators' plot and Mortianna's relationship with the Sheriff, and the new material creates a continuity error involving the Sheriff's scribe and his tongue.
