Movie trivia

  • 1

Matt Damon wrote Good Will Hunting as a final assignment for a playwriting class at Harvard, turning in a roughly 40-page script instead of the one-act requested; only the scene of Will and Sean's first meeting survived verbatim from that draft.

  • 2

Affleck and Damon were inspired by Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs success and improvised some scenes while recording tapes in which they imitated actors—envisioning Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro for the therapist and professor roles.

  • 3

The original screenplay included an action subplot involving NSA agents chasing Will around the city; after feedback from Rob Reiner and William Goldman they removed about 60 pages and refocused the story on interpersonal relationships.

  • 4

Affleck and Damon sold the script to Castle Rock Entertainment for $600,000 in November 1994, split the money evenly and spent all of it within six months.

  • 5

The title Good Will Hunting came from a script by their high school friend Derrick Bridgeman; Affleck and Damon promised him $10,000 for the title and Bridgeman later appears as a student in one of Lambeau's classes.

  • 6

Kevin Smith brought the script to Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein, who read it and bought it from Castle Rock for $1 million, sending the film into production with Affleck and Damon set to star.
