The film's original score was composed by Hans Zimmer. The Madagascar (Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring Zimmer's score and licensed/covered songs, was released May 24, 2005 by DreamWorks Records, Geffen Records and UMG Soundtracks. Sacha Baron Cohen's cover of I Like to Move It was specially noted and became a recurring franchise theme.

The penguins originated in a scrapped 1998 project called Rockumentary, a Beatles-esque penguin rock band shelved in 2001 due to music-rights problems; Eric Darnell later revived them as a commando unit.

King Julien was intended as a two-line role until Sacha Baron Cohen auditioned, improvising eight minutes of dialogue in an Indian accent, which led the filmmakers to rewrite the script and expand the character.

Tom McGrath recorded the temporary voice for Skipper; Robert Stack had been approached for the role but died two weeks before production, and CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg decided to keep McGrath's track, with many traits inspired by Stack.

The DVD released on November 15, 2005 included the short The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper and an 'I Like to Move It' music video; the film was theatrically re-released in the U.S. on January 16, 2026 for its twentieth anniversary.
