The film's soundtrack song 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 51st Academy Awards. Grease received five nominations at the 36th Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and two Best Original Song nods. In 2020 it was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry.

Co-producers Robert Stigwood and Allan Carr overruled writer Warren Casey's choice of theme (a Fox/Williams composition) and at the last minute commissioned a song from Barry Gibb.

John Travolta was cast as Danny as part of a three-picture deal with Robert Stigwood after Henry Winkler turned the role down; Travolta had earlier played Doody in a touring production and was supported by Kleiser while grieving Diana Hyland.

Olivia Newton-John agreed to a reduced fee in exchange for star billing and the right to rewrite the script; she had Sandy rewritten as an Australian to avoid an American accent and to make the character less passive.

Stockard Channing was 33—by far the oldest actor playing a student—was given a 'crow's feet test' to prove she could pass for younger, often filmed with softer focus, and she successfully lobbied to keep the song 'There Are Worse Things I Could Do'.

Jeff Conaway, who had played Kenickie on Broadway, did not perform the film's Kenickie number 'Greased Lightnin'' because Travolta wanted the song for himself; Jamie Donnelly alone reprised her Broadway role as Jan.
