Movie trivia

  • 1

Waititi conceived Jojo Rabbit after his mother introduced him to Christine Leunens' 2008 novel Caging Skies and wrote the screenplay in 2011.

  • 2

The first draft was a rough, drama-heavy adaptation that did not include Hitler; Waititi rewrote it to add comedy and the cartoonish imaginary Adolf character.

  • 3

The screenplay landed on the 2012 Black List and remained in development limbo for years until Fox Searchlight later showed interest.

  • 4

Casting teams reviewed about 1,000 audition tapes worldwide; Roman Griffin Davis, making his film debut, was cast six weeks before filming after also auditioning while up for Ford v Ferrari.

  • 5

Searchlight agreed to make the film only if Waititi portrayed the imaginary Adolf; he reluctantly accepted and recalled feeling embarrassed on set.

  • 6

Waititi moved production from Berlin to the Czech Republic because German rules limited minors' working hours; principal photography began in May 2018 and lasted about two months, and the film was credited as a US–New Zealand–Czech co-production.
