Soundtrack

Score by Mark Korven

Mark Korven composed a score aiming for tense, dissonant minimalism; Eggers forbade electronic instruments and traditional harmony, so Korven used atypical instruments such as the nyckelharpa and waterphone and relied on improvisation so Eggers could move notes as needed.

Movie trivia

  • 1

Robert Eggers was inspired to write the film by his childhood fascination with witches and frequent school visits to the Plimoth Plantation.

  • 2

The Witch is Anya Taylor-Joy's feature film debut.

  • 3

Casting took place in England because Eggers wanted authentic accents for a family newly arrived in colonial Plymouth.

  • 4

Eggers insisted on historical accuracy for the set, hiring a thatcher and a carpenter from Virginia and Massachusetts with experience building in the film's period style.

  • 5

Although Eggers wanted to film in New England, the production moved to Canada for tax incentives and ultimately scouted an 'extremely remote' forest location in Kiosk, Ontario.

  • 6

To give the film an authentic look Eggers shot only with natural light and, for interiors, used only candlelight.
