Movie trivia
-
1
The film was financed and distributed by New Line Cinema but filmed and edited entirely in Peter Jackson's native New Zealand, with production occurring concurrently with the other two parts of the trilogy.
-
2
Before filming began the principal actors trained six weeks in sword fighting (with Bob Anderson), riding and boating to bond, acclimatize to life in Wellington, and were trained to pronounce Tolkien's verses properly.
-
3
After the shoot the nine cast members who played the Fellowship got a tattoo of the Elvish symbol for the number nine; John Rhys-Davies did not get one—his stunt double got it instead.
-
4
Ian McKellen based Gandalf's accent on a recording of Tolkien reading The Hobbit and, unlike his on-screen character, did not spend much time with the actors playing the Hobbits, instead working with their scale doubles.
-
5
Viggo Mortensen replaced Stuart Townsend during filming when Jackson realized Townsend was too young; Mortensen read the book on the plane, took a crash-course fencing lesson, patched his own costume and carried his sword off-camera, becoming a hit with the crew.
-
6
Andy Serkis was approached for Gollum while working on a 1999 six-episode Oliver Twist miniseries and was initially doubtful because his face would not appear onscreen; Gollum appears briefly in the prologue and is only heard or partially shown in later scenes.
