Movie trivia
-
1
Andrew Kevin Walker conceived Seven after moving from suburban Pennsylvania to New York and began the spec script in 1991 while working at Tower Records, deliberately leaving aspects open to interpretation to unsettle viewers.
-
2
Italian company Penta Film optioned the script but demanded removal of the bleak 'head in a box' ending; Walker complied with a more conventional conclusion and ultimately wrote thirteen drafts trying to satisfy studio demands.
-
3
Penta Film's financial troubles led to the project's rights being sold to producer Arnold Kopelson and New Line Cinema, during which Jeremiah S. Chechik left and Guillermo del Toro and Phil Joanou were considered as replacements.
-
4
David Fincher, coming off a negative experience with Alien 3, was mistakenly sent Walker's original script, became captivated by its uncompromising ending, and insisted on directing only if that original ending remained intact.
-
5
Brad Pitt agreed to star only if the head-in-the-box ending was retained and insisted that Mills be the one to kill John Doe, believing Mills should act out of passion rather than morality; producer Kopelson later backed Fincher after assurances the head would not be shown on screen.
-
6
Although test audiences returned middling results and studios expected poor performance because of the film's violent content, Seven grossed $327 million worldwide, became a sleeper hit, and was the seventh highest-grossing film of the year.
