During a trip to Germany to scatter their grandfather's ashes, German-American brothers Todd and Jan discover Beerfest, the secret Olympics of downing stout, and want to enter the contest to defend their family's beer-guzzling honor. Their Old Country cousins sneer at the Yanks' chances, prompting the siblings to return to America to prepare for a showdown the following year.

Jay Chandrasekhar said the film's concept came from a beer‑garden incident in Australia where the troupe challenged top drinkers, lost when Paul Soter drank, staged arm‑wrestling, insulted Russell Crowe and were escorted out by security.

Home media released two versions: the theatrical cut and an unrated version that runs ten minutes longer and includes eight brief scenes.

Although the film's endcard promised 'Potfest' as a joke, Broken Lizard later discussed an animated Potfest, a possible 'Smokefest' with Willie Nelson/Cheech/Snoop Dogg, a planned live‑action followup and a 2016 CW Seed series announcement; a 2018 TV film, Beerfest: Thirst for Victory, was released with no involvement from Broken Lizard.
