Movie trivia

  • 1

The film preserves the novel's metafictional structure by framing the main tale as a book being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson.

  • 2

Rob Reiner was gifted the book by his father, decided to adapt it after the success of This Is Spinal Tap, worked closely with William Goldman, and secured financial support from Norman Lear with distribution by 20th Century Fox.

  • 3

Earlier attempts to film the novel included 20th Century Fox paying Goldman $500,000 in 1973 and signing Richard Lester before the project stalled; Goldman later bought back the rights and directors like François Truffaut, Robert Redford and Norman Jewison also tried to adapt it.

  • 4

Reiner settled quickly on Cary Elwes for Westley based on his performance in Lady Jane and flew to West Berlin to meet him while Elwes was filming Maschenka to confirm the casting.

  • 5

Robin Wright was cast about a week before filming after a wide audition process; when she arrived at Reiner's door in a white dress William Goldman reportedly felt she perfectly matched the character.

  • 6

Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin trained about three weeks with fencing instructors Bob Anderson and stunt coordinator Peter Diamond, learned to fence left- and right-handed, and performed their own combat scenes except for two somersaults done by stunt doubles.
