Blake Lively unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of Natalie Hillard before Mara Wilson was cast in the part.

Tim Allen was offered both the roles of Daniel Hillard and Stu Dunmeyer but declined; other casting considerations included Daniel Stern for Stu, Catherine O'Hara and Kirstie Alley for Miranda, and George Carlin, Gene Wilder and Charles Grodin for Jonathan Lundy.
