Score by Jeff Danna
Composers Mychael and Jeff Danna were hired to score the film; Brandi Carlile recorded the end-credits song Carried Me With You co-written with Phil and Tim Hanseroth. The soundtrack was released February 28, 2020, seven days before the film's U.S. release.

Director Dan Scanlon based Onward on the death of his father when Scanlon was a year old and his brother three, and was inspired after the family found an old cassette with their father's voice that ended with the words Hii and Goodbye.

Onward spent six years in development; it was announced at the D23 Expo in July 2017 and the title and principal cast were revealed on December 12, 2018.

Tom Holland and Chris Pratt recorded most of their lines separately but had some joint recording sessions during which they improvised lines, according to Scanlon and producer Kori Rae.

Animators studied films like Fantasia, Aladdin, and Hercules to design the film's magic, developing hand-drawn shapes first and converting them into computer-animated volumetric, glowing objects to balance 2D graphics with CGI depth.

A storyboarded sequence with a goat girl and three singing mermaids luring Ian and the goat girl into sinking houses was deleted because filmmakers wanted to keep the focus on Ian and Barley and felt the scene was too grim.

The film was banned in Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia after a brief line by the cyclops officer Specter indicating she has a girlfriend; some Arabic dubs changed the line to my sister's daughter and the Russian dub changed it to my partner's daughter.
