Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the script during their teen years; it is loosely based on their Grade 12 experience at Point Grey Secondary School in Vancouver and the main characters share their given names.

Rogen was initially slated to play Seth but, due to his age and physical size, he instead portrayed Officer Michaels while Jonah Hill played Seth and Bill Hader played Officer Slater.

Superbad took seven years to complete, with early scripting beginning in 2000 and principal filming occurring in 2006–2007.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Emma Stone made their film debuts in Superbad; Mintz-Plasse was 17 at the time of filming, so his mother was required to be present on set during the filming of his sex scene.

The film was primarily shot in Los Angeles in fall 2006: high school exteriors at El Segundo High School, mall scenes at Fox Hills Mall in Culver City, the liquor store in Glendale, and the donut sequence filmed in a parking lot at California State University, Northridge.

The special-edition DVD included a replica of the fake McLovin ID that heavily resembled Hawaii's real driver's license, sparking controversy and prompting Walmart to remove the DVD from shelves in Hawaii.
