Movie trivia

  • 1

Paul Feig developed the female spy comedy originally titled Susan Cooper (announced June 18, 2013), wrote and directed the film, and the title was changed to Spy on March 28, 2014.

  • 2

Melissa McCarthy entered negotiations to play the title role on July 25, 2013, while Zooey Deschanel was originally slated to play Elaine Crocker but left the project.

  • 3

During 2014 the cast expanded to include Jason Statham, Jude Law, Miranda Hart, Bobby Cannavale and others; 50 Cent appears as himself, and Nia Long did not appear in the finished film.

  • 4

Principal photography began on March 31, 2014, in Budapest, with most shooting done there for tax breaks and because its architecture allowed it to stand in for other locations such as Paris.

  • 5

A prosthetic was used for shots of Nicola (Julian Miller) exposing himself, and the production had to present those prosthetics to the MPAA as part of the film's rating process.

  • 6

Paul Feig said Spy went through about 10 test screenings during which he records audience laughter to refine jokes, a process Judd Apatow endorsed as useful for comedy.
