The score was composed by Mychael Danna, who incorporated the song The Mighty Rio Grande by This Will Destroy You throughout the film. Joe Satriani performs the Star‑Spangled Banner at the first game, Kerris Dorsey sings a cover of Lenka's 2008 song The Show, and Parliament's Give Up the Funk appears on the soundtrack.

Sony hired Steven Soderbergh to direct a semi‑documentary version featuring real players and interviews, but five days before the planned July 2009 start the studio put the film into turnaround after a last‑minute Soderbergh rewrite and he exited the project.

Aaron Sorkin was brought in to rewrite the screenplay after Bennett Miller was hired; Paul DePodesta's real name was removed at his request and Jonah Hill was cast as the DePodesta‑like character Peter Brand.
