Movie trivia
-
1
Kevin Jarre was originally the film's director but was fired a month into filming for falling behind and failing to get needed shots; George P. Cosmatos replaced him.
-
2
Michael Biehn, a close friend of Jarre, considered quitting after Jarre's dismissal and felt Cosmatos 'had no understanding or appreciation of the screenplay,' though the cast stayed on.
-
3
Kurt Russell worked with producer James Jacks to pare down Jarre's sprawling script, deleting subplots and emphasizing the Wyatt–Doc relationship; Russell later claimed he essentially directed the film and called Cosmatos a 'ghost director,' a view Val Kilmer partly supported.
-
4
Cosmatos was highly focused on historical authenticity in costumes, props, customs, and scenery; all mustaches in the movie were real except Jon Tenney's, who wore a fake mustache.
-
5
Val Kilmer practiced extensively to improve his quick-draw speed and gave Doc Holliday a genteel Southern accent.
-
6
The scene in which Wyatt throws an abusive card dealer (Billy Bob Thornton) was designed to show Wyatt's psychological intimidation; Thornton's lines there were ad-libbed after he was only told to 'be a bully.
