Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. Development began in 1998 after John Lasseter and Jorgen Klubien discussed making a film about cars; Klubien initially wrote a script titled The Yellow Car about an electric car before major rewrites expanded Mater and Doc's roles.

Lasseter's 2000 cross-country road trip inspired the story; he contacted Route 66 historian Michael Wallis, who led eleven Pixar animators in rented white Cadillacs on two Route 66 research trips.

The film's working title was Route 66 but was changed to Cars to avoid confusion with the 1960s television series; Lightning McQueen's racing number was changed from 57 to 95.

Co-writer Joe Ranft died in a car crash during production; the film was dedicated to him and his last two voice roles in the film were Red and Jerry Recycled Batteries.
