Score by Mark Mothersbaugh
The score was composed by Mark Mothersbaugh. In September 2014 La-La Land Records released a limited double-disc album (2,000 copies), the second disc also containing Mothersbaugh's score for 22 Jump Street. A modernized cover of the original TV theme by Rye Rye and Esthero was issued as an iTunes single, and 21 songs were licensed for the film.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller made their live-action directorial debuts on this adaptation, which was written by Michael Bacall from a story by Bacall and Jonah Hill.

Jonah Hill rewrote an earlier script by Joe Gazzam, executive produced the film and initially wanted Rob Zombie to direct; in 2009 he described the project as an R-rated, Bad Boys–meets–John Hughes type of movie.

Production filmed in and around New Orleans from April to June 2011 but deliberately disguised the location as a generic "Metropolitan City" by replacing street signs, digitally removing billboards and avoiding iconic imagery, though some landmarks remain visible.

The film premiered at SXSW on March 12, 2012 and opened wide March 16; it went on to become the top-grossing high school comedy film of all time.
