Score by John Debney
The soundtrack was composed by Robert Rodriguez, John Debney and Graeme Revell, with Revell scoring The Hard Goodbye, Debney The Big Fat Kill and Rodriguez That Yellow Bastard (Rodriguez co-scored several tracks). The Servant's instrumental "Cells" featured heavily in publicity and DVD menus; "Sensemayá" and Fluke's "Absurd" are used in the film.

The film's color processing rendered most of the movie in black and white while retaining or adding color for selected objects, a technique that drew particular recognition.

Several scenes were shot before any actor had signed on, so stand-ins were used and the actual actors were digitally added into the film during post-production.

Rodriguez strove to remain faithful to the source, calling the film less of an adaptation than a translation; consequently there is no screenwriting credit and the onscreen credit reads Based on the graphic novels by Frank Miller.

Three directors received credit — Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino — with Tarantino directing the drive-to-the-pits scene and being paid one dollar.

When the Directors Guild of America refused to allow two non-established directors to be jointly credited, Robert Rodriguez resigned from the Guild so the joint credit with Frank Miller could remain.
