Fired from his band and hard up for cash, guitarist and vocalist Dewey Finn finagles his way into a job as a fifth-grade substitute teacher at a private school, where he secretly begins teaching his straight-A students the finer points of rock 'n' roll and the power of sticking it to the man. Jack Black received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Comedy or Musical (he lost to Bill Murray for Lost in Translation); Black won the MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance, and the film won Best Comedy Film at the 2004 British Comedy Awards.

The soundtrack was released September 30, 2003; Sammy James Jr. co-wrote the title track with Mike White and The Mooney Suzuki backed Jack Black and the child musicians. Linklater recruited 13-year-old musicians nationwide, and he filmed a plea video that secured Led Zeppelin's permission for 'Immigrant Song,' included on the DVD/Blu-ray.

    Filming began on December 2, 2002, with many scenes shot around New York City; the school shown is Main Hall at Wagner College in Staten Island and all hallway scenes were shot in a single hallway, according to the DVD commentary.
