Movie trivia

  • 1

Behind Enemy Lines was John Moore's feature directorial debut and stars Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman in a story loosely based on a 1995 incident involving Scott O'Grady.

  • 2

When Moore was hired in December 1999 James Van Der Beek was originally attached to star, but by July 2000 Van Der Beek had been replaced by Owen Wilson.

  • 3

Principal photography took place at Koliba Studios in Bratislava and on location in the Slovak village of Háj, where a prop angel from the film remains.

  • 4

The production received U.S. military assistance in exchange for script changes; exterior carrier footage was filmed aboard USS Carl Vinson while interiors were shot on USS Constellation and on a set.

  • 5

Scott O'Grady filed suit against the producers alleging misappropriation of his identity, defamation and false advertising over the film's portrayal; the case was settled out of court and the article notes the film's events differ from his real experience.

  • 6

The film was a commercial success, grossing $121.7 million worldwide on an estimated $40 million budget and launched a franchise of three direct-to-video sequels.
