Movie trivia

  • 1

Development began in 2007 when Quentin Tarantino was writing a book on Sergio Corbucci; he described the project as a new type of film he called 'a Southern'—a spaghetti-Western approach to America's history of slavery.

  • 2

Django Unchained is a highly stylized, revisionist tribute to spaghetti Westerns; its title alludes to Corbucci's 1966 Django and Tarantino incorporated snow scenes as an homage to The Great Silence.

  • 3

Tarantino finished the script on April 26, 2011, and handed the final draft to the Weinstein Company.

  • 4

Several actors were considered for the title role—Michael K. Williams, Will Smith, and Idris Elba—before Jamie Foxx was cast; Will Smith later said he turned the role down because it wasn't the lead and not for him.

  • 5

Tarantino and RZA intended a crossover with RZA's The Man with the Iron Fists that would have featured a younger version of the blacksmith as a slave in an auction, but scheduling conflicts prevented RZA's participation.

  • 6

Costume designer Sharen Davis drew from spaghetti Westerns and Bonanza, hiring Bonanza's hatmaker for Django's hat, using Thomas Gainsborough's The Blue Boy as a reference for the valet outfit, and basing Django's sunglasses on Charles Bronson's in The White Buffalo.
